Until now, Singapore has been the only Asian country to have launched DMB last year. It is expected that DMB will be introduced to Hong Kong the coming summer. Cash would implement DMB technology to deliver real-time financial information to its clients.

It would have been the UK's first intervention on the currency markets since 1992 when sterling crashed out of the exchange rate mechanism after the government spent pounds 10bn trying to prop it up.

The minutes of this month's Monetary Policy Committee meeting showed the pound dominated its debate over rates. The comments caught the market by surprise and sterling fell against the dollar and the euro.

Grupo Mexico's net sales rose 94.2 percent to 7.41 billion pesos ($778.4 million) because of its acquisition of Asarco last year. But earnings rose only 28.4 percent to 993.11 million pesos ($105.6 million) because of the negative foreign exchange effect.

Grupo Mexico's metal sales were 12.7 percent higher in dollar terms but 3.6 percent lower in pesos vs. the first quarter of 1999. Asarco's sales were 4.7 percent and 17.9 percent lower, respectively; Southern Peru Copper Corp.'s sales were 31.6 percent and 13.4 percent higher, respectively.
